Special Contract Proposal

The Bartram Trail Conference Board of Managers met with the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, now the Heritage, Conservation and Recreation Service (HCRS), Southeast Region, and the officially established Federal/State Bartram National Scenic Trail Study Task Force on July 27, 1977. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the public role in the forthcoming trail study. It was conceded that the Bartram Trail Conference, by its membership and purpose, was in a unique position to represent the public as a participant in the study effort. The Conference submitted a proposal to the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation (hereafter referred to as BOR) setting forth specific goals and objectives which the Conference pledged to meet if given an opportunity to participate in the study. After a period of review in which proposals from other organizations were considered, BOR agreed to contract with the Bartram Trail Conference to prepare a Heritage Study which would place William Bartram in an accurate historical context and help to determine the recreational and educational needs of the eight states through which Bartram traveled two hundred years ago.
